What US state is the birthplace to the most presidents? If you guessed Virginia, you’re right! Ohio comes in second place with seven. New York is third with five, and Massachusetts is in fourth with four. Beyond those four states, no other US state is birthplace to more than two presidents, and 39 states have yet to be the birthplace of a president. However, just because a president wasn’t born in a state doesn’t mean he isn’t from there. For example, Illinois is often referred to as the ‘Land of Lincoln’, but Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky. Often times, a president made his residence in a state other than his birthplace. Michigan is one of the 39 states in which a president was never born, but it counts Gerald Ford as a native son. While Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, he lived nearly the entirety of his life in Michigan, and will always be strongly associated with the state. Ford’s Early Life in MichiganGerald Ford was born in Nebraska in 1913, but his parents split up only 2 weeks after his birth. Ford moved with his mother to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she soon remarried to a Grand Rapid businessman named Gerald R. Ford. The young Gerald had his named changed to Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. in honor of the man whom he’d consider as his father for the rest of his life. Ford grew up to be a star athlete and went to the University of Michigan for college. Ford’s Career at the University of MichiganFord’s athletic achievements continued at the University of Michigan, where he became a standout player on the football team. Ford played multiple positions, as was common at the time, and was a part of two Michigan national championships in 1932 and 1933. Ford then went on to be voted Michigan’s most valuable player of the 1934 season, his last year at the University. His number has been retired by the University of Michigan. You can make an argument that Gerald Ford is the greatest athlete to ever become a US President. Ford’s Rise to ProminenceFord went to Yale for law school, then joined the Navy after the Pearl Harbor attack. After serving his country during the war, Ford returned to Michigan, where he practiced law and became involved with local Republican politics. In 1949, Ford challenged the Republican incumbent for a seat in the House of Representatives representing Michigan and won. He would hold that seat for more than 20 years, until 1973, serving his constituents and eventually rising to the position of House Minority Speaker. In 1973, Vice-President Spiro Agnew was forced to resign in disgrace after a scandal, and President Richard Nixon chose Ford as the new Vice President. Ford then found himself elevated to the presidency after Richard Nixon resigned in the wake of the fallout from the Watergate scandal. Ford would serve as president from 1974 to 1977, losing re-election to Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election. Ford holds the distinction of being the only US President not to be elected as either president or vice president. Ford’s Michigan LegacyAs a star athlete for Michigan’s most prominent university and a loyal public servant of the state in Congress for nearly 25 years, Gerald Ford was a man the people of Michigan embraced as their own. By the time it was admitted to the union as the 26th state on January 26, 1837, it had already seen many population changes, a number of wars, as well as the construction of the Erie Canal. Some of the first residents were the Hopewell culture, dating back to 1000 B.C. However, when the first Europeans arrived on the scene, the local people were, among others, the Ottawa, the Potawatomi and Ojibwe tribes of Native Americans. The first Europeans in the area were French explorers looking for a western route to China. They did not find tea but instead fur that would fetch a high price back in Europe, and started trading with local tribes. The first permanent settlement was established in 1668. Soon after, in 1701, the trading post that would later become the city of Detroit was founded. By 1763 the local tribes had become unhappy with the Europeans rapid expansion and appropriation of their land and staged an attack, led by Cheif Pontiac, which was eventually put down by the British. In 1805 Michigan became a United States Territory, but there would continue to be battles fought for control between British and U.S. forces until 1813. The 1820s and 1830s saw an influx of migrants, many from New York. This climb in population and settlement led the federal government to take steps to give Michigan statehood in 1835, with the proposal passing in 1837. After the Civil War Michigan prospered, with the population doubling between 1870 and 1890. Railroads came as a boon to commerce and connected the many growing industries like lumber harvesting, dairy farming, and manufacturing with their respective customers. In the 1900s, urban areas flourished. Detriot grew rapidly due to the burgeoning automotive industry, and in Battle Creek, the now-famous Kellogs and Post breakfast cereal companies changed the way people ate. Then came Henry Ford and his production line, which revolutionized manufacturing, and affordable vehicles exploded onto the scene, with Michigan at the heart of it all. Immigrants poured in from southern and eastern Europe, as well as the South of the U.S. With this influx came the diversity for which Detroit and Michigan, in general, is known. World War 2 created many new manufacturing jobs that led to prosperity in the post-war years. Motown Records was created and gave the world more great music than can anyone can shake a stick at. The years since this heyday have brought a lot of struggle and strife to Michigan and its citizens. Between racial tensions, the oil crisis, and burst housing bubbles, not to mention undrinkable water, Michiganians have had much with which to contend. But this only underlines the determination and tenacity that characterizes this part of the country. While most of the state makes sense from a map-making perspective, there’s still the Upper Penninsula for which you must account. Understanding how Michigan got the Upper Penninsula is a great way to learn a little bit more about Michigan’s amazing history. The Origins of MichiganThe territory that would someday become Michigan did not actually become part of the country until the end of the Revolutionary War. Ceded to the country as part of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the initial ‘Michigan Territory’ actually only consisted of the Lower Penninsula. It took time for Britain to give up its claims to the Upper Penninsula, as the area was particularly rich in furs. By 1819, though, the Upper Penninsula became part of the greater Michigan territory. This territory was far larger than the modern day state, though, also encompassing Wisconsin and even parts of Minnesota. When Michigan finally applied to become a state in the 1830s, it would bring in none of the new territory – not even the Upper Penninsula. The Toledo WarOne of the problems with the early United States is that many people didn’t understand the boundaries between territories all that well. One of the major areas of contention was between Ohio and Michigan, concerning the area on the border of the two states. When Michigan applied to become a state, it tried to add the disputed territory. The war between Ohio and Michigan wasn’t much of a war. The two states deployed militias on either side of the disputed territory, but no one was ever killed. In fact, the only battle ended with shots being fired into the air and everyone going home. In the end, a compromise was reached. Ohio got the so-called Toledo strip, while Michigan got the Upper Penninsula. In December of 1836, members of Michigan’s legislature agreed to the deal and Michigan assumed the shape that we know and love today. The Great Upper PenninsulaAt the time, most people thought that Michigan was getting the short end of the stick when it came to the deal. After all, the Upper Penninsula was sparsely inhabited, didn’t have great farmland, and much of the fur trade had died off. Of course, that was before anyone found the copper and iron deposits there. Once the deposits were discovered, it was roundly believed that Michigan was the real winner of the Toledo War. Thanks to the Upper Penninsula, Michigan would get a head start on the industrial development that would lead to the state’s golden age. Michigan’s history has led to the creation of an unusually-shaped, if still amazing, state. It’s amazing to think that none of this would have happened had either Michigan or Ohio actually understood how to read map boundaries correctly, but in the end, the compromise worked out in Michigan’s favor and helped to create the state as its known today. One of the best ways to celebrate Michigan’s unique history with collectibles and apparel that can remind you of the state. Many people are unaware of the rich history steeped in the wine vineyards of the state of Michigan. The nearby French-Canadians along with American farmers paved the way as far back as 1679 for the future of beautiful vineyards and tasty wines. The French Explorers discovered distinctive wild grape vines on a river in Michigan which is now called the Detroit River. Commander Antoine de la Moth Cadillac first planted grapevines at Fort Ponchartrain in Detroit during 1702. The French kept on exploring downriver to what is now known as the River Raisin. River Raisin runs into Joseph M. Sterling was the first pioneer to establish the Pointe Aux Peaux wine company and produce wine for sale in 1868. Sterling had knowledge of winemaking he had learned in Europe and used it to prosper on 100 acres of grapes in Monroe, Michigan. He helped and encouraged neighboring farmers to grow their own vineyards. Before long, there were vineyards popping up everywhere! You can still visit Sterling State Park, named after Joseph M. Sterling. Prohibition came along in 1918 as the 18th Amendment, putting some vineyards and local saloons out of business. With Canada nearby, it was easy to bootleg wine and spirits down the river to Monroe. Many risked their lives in the dangerous bootleg business. This went on for years until 1933, when the 21st Amendment repealed prohibition. Two essential vineyard farmers in Ontario and Windsor, Canada, helped bring the wineries and vineyards back to Michigan once prohibition was repealed. The first farmer, Maurice R. Twomey, founded the Windsor Wine Company and second, Mariono Meconi began Border City Wine Cellars. Border City Wine Cellars was consumed in a treacherous fire and the grapes were none prompting Mariano Meconi to move to Detroit and begin again. Meconi’s winery is now known as St. Julian Wine Company, the oldest in the state. Maurice R. Twomey relocated his winery to the Detroit United Railway after prohibition and named it La Salle Wines and Champagne Company. There are many wine tours in Michigan. Wine trails consist of vineyards and wineries grouped together for tourist fun and access. There are four extensive wine trails throughout Michigan: Lake Michigan Shore Wine TrailLake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is quite large with eleven members. They offer Wine Trail weekends, plenty of road signs and, a website to help tourists find them. They put on the none other than Leland Wine and Food Festival every year. Wineries of Old Mission PeninsulaOld Mission Peninsula has wineries all along the peninsula. They host fun wine trail events as well as a website. Southeast Michigan Pioneer Wine TrailThe Southeast Michigan Wine Trail promotes the wines from their area.
